Gosh thank you Margo!! It is so nourishing and meaningful and expansive to have this reading and writing exchange as we do on here, to be finding kindred hearts π
Happy because, as a cardiologist, he understood that the bypass made his end an "in your face" reality. He shifted to a kind of surrender to vulnerability, a gift to himself and his loved ones.
Sad because your beautiful essay reminds me of how hard it is to hear the intangible in our world. Our reactions are routinized while, at the same time, suppressing those tiny feelings of doubt/failure/remorse.

This is beautiful. I'm so glad to have found you. I wonder if you've read Brian Doyle's essay collection "One Long River of Song." He has a piece on the heart, which brought me to my knees. I am not home now, but if you're interested I can find it and excerpt it for you. Though I recommend the entire collection.
Thank you so much Isabel, I'm honored!! I've just looked up Brian Doyle - he seems like such a kindred spirit so I've just ordered 'One Long River of Song' - I'm writing more about the heart so your tip comes at just the right time, can't wait

I loved my father would have given these kind of insight into family, personalities and personal development while he worked live long on our Family Chronic. You might know him from a visit in CA in 1980 with my sister and mom.

You make my day Aoife π this was a hard one to write and publish so it is extra meaningful to receive such kind words as yours
